patrick tosani

Patrick tosani first studied architecture before studying photography during 1979. He has been developing his own practise which plays with the idea of 'precision, frontality of shots, sharpness, color, 'magnification' to question the strength of the image.'

His photography has one goal and the aim of it is to capture 'the highlight a situation of mixing between the body and the garment through the phenomenon of color'

The lack of body in tosanis work can mean many things, but the hidden truth is that its often depicted as disgusting and scary. From his work of ruelly bitten nails (Ongles, 1990) or hunched male bodies with no limbs or heads, their heels squashed against plexiglas, like cannonballs confronting the viewer (CDD, 1996)

His work is quite extraodinary as the way he creates images, you could mistaken them for paint. The idea of how he creates his portraits also causes me to think that his images and photography are all about 'identity' considering the difference yet similarity in his photographs. The way he uses colour in his work gives them a vintage aesthetic and almost makes them feel like old photographs from their form and the outfits from the models.

Patrick has been involved in several exhibitions, some of his own and some just as a host. His very first exhibition was in 1983 Galerie Liliane & Michel Durand-Dessert in paris. He had multiple exhibitions during 2004. I really like the lack of expressions and emotions and still involving the human face in your photographs without revealing as such.

Thomas ruff

Thomas ruff is a german photographer who was raised with 5 other siblings.Ruff was inspired by amateur photography magazines and began taking similar shots. Ruff recieving his first camera after visiting a evening class in the basic techniques of photography, which later led him to study photography as a career rather than a hobby. These images were his photographs that contributed to the effects of the great depression. Thomas ruff mentioned that the photographs were never edited or altered, only blown up to a large scale so the visitors of the gallery could see the small details. It is very ironic for Ruff to leave the images unedited as he is known as "a master of edited and reimagined images". From the lack of jewels to the somber expressions. There was never any persona spin on the images or any way to make them different from the others. Ruff created very straight forward images that showed reality through colour and simple portraits. Simple yet powerful.

I like to compare Ruff and tosanis work as they are very familiar but displayed differently. Tosani displayed his portraits very blurred and almost unseeable, and yet ruff has crystal sharp portraits that can be easily dismantled and figured out, while tosanis portraits remain somewhat of a mystery.

Yousuf Karsh

Yousuf Karsh is one of the most iconic photographers of the 20th century, and is even called the best. He photographs some of the most iconic figures to date, from albert einstine, to queen elizibath and even winston churchill. Even if you arent aware of the name, its a gurantee that you would of come across his portraits at least once.

Karsh was an Armenian Genocide survivor and a refugee who migrated to canada. After arriving in canada, Karsh was sent to quebec to live with his uncle who was a portrait photographer. After picking up the hobby, he traveled to otawwa to open his own studio.

Karsh's portraits hold a strong emotion attached to each of them,as each come with a story. The depth of his images clearly show through his work and hold statue to represent the iconic art figures he's photographed his whole life. Due to the rich emotion of his images, theyre often used as images to represent those who passed to show their power through these photographs.
